The treatment of the poor and the ability of a selfish man to redeem himself by transforming into a more sympathetic character are the key themes of the story. Dickens had written three Christmas stories prior to the novella, and was inspired following a visit to the Field Lane Ragged School, one of several establishments for London's street children. He was influenced by the experiences of his own youth and by the Christmas stories of other authors, including Washington Irving and Douglas Jerrold. For one night, the feisty blonde rocked his entire world-and now she wants to be friends? Nope. One of the reasons I love Hoover's stories is that she writes in such a straightforward way. It's an emotional masterpiece about loss and hope, grief and forgiveness, and how the power of love can heal. Just like many of Hoover's other books, it's heartbreaking but hopeful, and it will emotionally wreck you. The specifics of the plot are revealed pretty early on, so you're not kept in the dark for long, and just as I predicted, I was already tearing up before the 50-page mark - and pretty much didn't stop until the end. I personally like going into CoHo books a little blind (and have read that other readers feel the same way!), so all I knew of this book was the summary on the back cover and that I would most likely cry. As the two grow closer, they both risk losing everything. Upon returning to the town her daughter now lives in, she discovers that becoming a part of Diem's life is going to be much, much harder than she thought, even with the help of Ledger Ward, a man tied to her past and now her future. 18) follows Kenna Rowan, a young mother who works to reunite with her 4-year-old daughter, Diem, after serving a prison sentence for a tragic mistake. Colleen Hoover is one of my favorite romance novelists, so when I learned she was releasing a new contemporary romance, adding it to the top of my TBR list was a no-brainer. |
